Marjorie Taylor Greene: We know Jan 6 wasn’t ‘planned’ because ‘everyone was unarmed’ (That’s false)

In a post to her Facebook page this Friday, Georgia GOP Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene revealed what she thinks is one of the “biggest holes” in the “lie” about the riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 being a “planned insurrection.”

According to Greene, “all the people there were unarmed.”

“Anyone with half a brain knows that gun owners only leave their firearms at home when they don’t feel the need to carry a gun or are obeying the law. If a group of elected officials, who support the second amendment, actually organized an insurrection with the people who own guns, then they would have brought guns to the so called ‘planned insurrection,'” she wrote, adding that “we ALL denounced the riot.”

Greene then hinted at a conspiracy theory circulating in some right-wing circles that suggests Democrats were responsible for poor security at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

“The American people aren’t buying the lies,” she wrote.

But according to court documents, video evidence and news coverage, people did bring firearms to the Capitol that day. In a July fact check, Politifact reported that many of those who participated in the riot were indeed armed, and several had guns that police later seized. Several were charged with having firearms on Capitol grounds or stashed nearby on Jan. 6.

“PolitiFact reviewed the case files of approximately 430 defendants who were arrested and charged for their actions at the Capitol,” Politifact’s report stated. “We found several defendants who police say were found to have brought firearms with them. Some were charged with having firearms on Capitol grounds, while others stashed them away while in Washington.”
