‘Mom influencer’ who falsely accused Latino couple of trying to kidnap her kids is slapped with jail sentence

A “mom influencer” from California who in a 2020 viral video falsely accused a Latino couple of plotting to kidnap her children while she was shopping was sentenced to jail by a judge this Thursday, The New York Post reported.

Katie Sorensen was convicted in April of one count of making a false report of a crime.

Sorensen accused the couple of attempting to kidnap her two children on Dec. 7, 2021, at a local Michaels crafts store. She made the accusations in two Instagram videos that ended up being viewed by 4.5 million people.

“My children were the targets of attempted kidnap,” Sorensen said in the video. “I want to share that story with you in an effort to raise awareness.”

“I heard them talking about the features of my children, but I was totally paralyzed with fear,” Sorensen said. “I just couldn’t bring myself to say anything.”

The Sonoma County DA’s office announced that Sorensen was sentenced to serve 90 days in county jail, 60 on a work release program, for knowingly making a false report of a crime.

“Ms. Sorensen has been held accountable for her crime and we believe the Judge handed down a fair sentence,” District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a press release following the sentencing. “Our hope is that this measure of accountability will help provide some closure to the couple that was falsely accused of having attempted to kidnap two young children.”
