Nancy Pelosi: ‘I don’t want Trump impeached — I want him in prison’

In a private meeting with senior Democrats this Tuesday night, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that she’s not interested in impeaching President Trump — she wants to see him thrown in prison.

According to POLITICO, Pelosi made the comments to House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) and other senior Democrats.

When Nadler asked Pelosi to give the green light on an impeachment inquiry, she reportedly said no.

“I don’t want to see him impeached, I want to see him in prison,” Pelosi said according to multiple sources speaking to POLITICO.

Ashley Etienne, a Pelosi spokeswoman said Pelosi and the chairmen “had a productive meeting about the state of play with the Mueller report. They agreed to keep all options on the table and continue to move forward with an aggressive hearing and legislative strategy, as early as next week, to address the president’s corruption and abuses of power uncovered in the report.”

As The Hill points out, Pelosi’s reported comments came one day before Nadler appeared on CNN and said that although an impeachment inquiry may be in the future, “there doesn’t appear” to be much support for it currently.

Pelosi’s hesitancy with impeachment talk has been the subject of op-eds for weeks. In The Atlantic, Elaine Godfrey says that Democrats have been almost uniformly wary of impeachment for a while now. Even some who call for impeachment publicly are much more measured in private.

“I don’t think [those conversations] really are happening,” Rep. John Yarmouth (D-KY) told Godfrey.

Whether Pelosi thinks she has a case or just trying to kick the can down the road remains to be seen.
