Obama rips Ted Cruz’s Muslim surveillance plans: ‘His own father escaped a country that does the same thing’

Just after the Brussels bombings made international news, the GOP frontrunners, notably Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, unsurprisingly had some disturbing ideas on how to confront Islamist terror.

This time around and in a rare occurrence, Cruz managed to out-Trump The Donald, making headlines with his ghoulish plan to keep tabs on Muslim Americans, calling on the United States to “empower law enforcement to patrol and secure Muslim neighborhoods before they become radicalized.”

During a press conference in Buenos Aires, President Obama directly addressed the hypocrisy of Cruz’s comments, pointing out that the GOP candidate’s own father escaped from a country that employed the very same authoritarian tactics against its own citizens.

“As far as the notion of having surveillance of neighborhoods where Muslims are present — I just left a country that engages in that kind of neighborhood surveillance,” Obama said, referring to his recent historical trip to Cuba. “Which, by the way, the father of Senator Cruz escaped for America, the land of the free. The notion that we would start down that slippery slope makes absolutely no sense.”
