Proud boys leader pleads guilty to charges related to Capitol riot

The leader of the West Virginia chapter of the right-wing extremist group Proud Boys pleaded guilty to charges related to Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol this Wednesday, CNN reports.

Jeffrey Finley, 29, was charged with illegally entering the US Capitol grounds and faces up to one year in prison. “The plea could be a significant step in one of the Justice Department’s most crucial investigations related to the attack, as prosecutors home in on what Proud Boys leaders had planned as they descended on the Capitol. Finley has corroborated evidence prosecutors may use in other cases,” according to CNN.

Prosecutors have alleged that Proud Boys members brought communication devices to the riot. Finley reported was wearing an earpiece on that day.

The plea agreement states that in the days after the riot, Finley deleted photos, videos, and messages he exchanged with other Proud Boys members who were at the Capitol on Jan. 6. He also told other members to do the same.
