Right-wing radio host: ‘The left is creating the Flint water crisis and Zika virus to scare people’

Sandy Rios is the director of governmental affairs for the right-wing group the American Family Association. She also has her own radio show. On a recent edition, a listener called in to lambaste Rios and other right-wingers for not commenting on the water crisis in Flint, Michigan, as well as the growing chance that the deadly Zika virus could become an epidemic.

Rios, however, seemed unconcerned about either of these obviously dire public health issues. Instead, she blamed Democrats for the situation with the lead-poisoned water in Flint, and said the Zika virus was a ploy by liberals to strike fear in the hearts and minds of the public.

To make matters worse, the host decided that unrelated problems, such as America’s “out of control borders” and ISIS are what we should be talking about.

The caller was outraged, and accused Rios of “devaluing black life.” Rios played innocent, saying she didn’t know if Flint’s population was black or white. She went on to blame liberals again, and to tell the caller:

“The whole issue in Michigan — the left loves to, they’re now creating this, I’m sorry, I’m going to really go out on a limb here, this Zika virus which I haven’t talked about. They love to come up with tragedies and they love to blame and they love to scare people. I think this issue in Michigan is a serious one but I don’t think it’s the big issue that these other issues are.”
