Shocking video shows NYPD cruiser — without siren on — repeatedly try to crash into moped rider on the freeway

Shocking video posted to social media shows an NYPD cruiser swerving into a what looks to be a moped, at times almost knocking its driver off onto the freeway.

The cruiser can be seen swerving in front of and behind and almost into the moped, forcing the driver to take an exit ramp.

According to ABC 7, the incident appears to have taken place southbound on the Whitestone Expressway in Queens.

Speaking to ABC 7, former NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said the officer in the cruiser was breaking a lot of rules.

“There was no sirens used, there were no lights at all, also no [loudspeaker] engaged telling the person to stop” Boyce said.

“Some of those things like crowding you saw, that’s inherently dangerous, it can get someone hurt,” Boyce said. “It’s not only dangerous for the officer or the person on the motor scooter, but everyone on that highway.”

Moped, or scooter — anything less than a motorcycle is illegal on U.S. freeways.

“It doesn’t have the power to accelerate or decelerate and it’s dangerous because it’s very small and you have a sight disability, a motorcycle is totally different,” Boyce said.

Not much else is known about the incident or what sparked it.
