Teacher investigated by Florida Department of Education for showing Disney movie to her class

A teacher says she’s being investigated by the Florida Department of Education after she showed a Disney movie that featured a biracial gay character to her class, CNN reported.

Jenna Barbee, who teaches at Winding Waters K-8 school, posted a video to TikTok this weekend, declaring, “I am the teacher that’s under investigation with the Florida Department of Education for indoctrination for showing a Disney movie.” Barbee said she showed the movie “Strange World,” to the class and the students all had signed permission forms from their parents stating that it was okay to show them movies rated PG.

Barbee said a parent complained and reported her to the state Department of Education. Spokesperson for Hernando County Schools Karen Jordan provided CNN with a copy of the announcement from the school district regarding the showing of the movie.

“Yesterday, the Disney movie ‘Strange World’ was shown in your child’s classroom,” the school district said. “While not the main plot of the movie, parts of the story involves a male character having and expressing feelings for another male character. In the future, this movie will not be shown. The school administration and the district’s Professional Standards Dept is currently reviewing the matter to see if further corrective action is required.”

The complaint stems from a Florida law, dubbed by critics as the “Don’t Say Gay” law, which prohibits some discussions of sex and gender in the classroom.

“Strange World” told the story of a family of explorers and featured Disney’s first-ever out-gay character, voiced by comedian Jaboukie Young-White.
