According to some archaeologists and historians, several whistles found in the grave of a man executed and buried in front of a temple dedicated to the Aztec wind god are “Aztec death whistles,” and yes, they sound like screaming death.
Some experts believe they were used during rituals to summon the wind, while others believe the whistle was used to intimidate enemies during battle or as a ritual before executions. Given the sound of these things, we’re inclined to believe the latter.
But just in case you’re running out of gift ideas for Christmas, recreations of this horrific instrument are only $100 at the Oregon Flute Store.
