Three Texas cops charged with murder after opening fire on woman having ‘mental health crisis’

Three Texas police officers have been charged with murder after they fatally shot a woman who was in the midst of a “mental health crisis,” CBS News reported.

Sgt. Alfred Flores and Officers Eleazar Alejandro and Nathaniel Villalobos, all of the San Antonio Police Department, were suspended without pay and later arrested for murder in the shooting death of Melissa Perez, 46. Police bodycam footage shows Perez refusing to come out of her apartment after being ordered by police.

“The officers’ actions were not consistent with SAPD’s policy and training,” Police Chief William McManus said during a Friday news conference. “They placed themselves in a situation where they used deadly force which was not reasonable given all the circumstances as we now understand them.”

Police say an officer opened fire after Perez threw a glass candlestick at the officers and swung a hammer at them. When she approached the officers again with the hammer, all three opened fire. She was hit at least twice.

“This incident will continue to be thoroughly investigated, as are all officer involved shootings,” McManus said.
