St. Patrick’s Day is coming up this March 17, and President Trump decided to pay homage to the Irish with a brand new “Make America Great Again”hat, this time in the color of green. Unfortunately, whoever passed off on the hat’s design wasn’t up to speed on the nuances of Irish tradition.
The hat features Trump’s patented gold lettering in the front, with what some are calling an “alternative shamrock” on the back. Point is, it’s not a shamrock — it’s a four leaf clover.
The difference here is important. A four leaf clover is a universal symbol of good luck, and not necessarily associated with Irish culture specifically. The shamrock is specifically associated with Ireland because the country’s patron saint, Patrick, is said to have used the leaf to symbolize the Holy Trinity.

The hat was promoted on various GOP and Trump-related Twitter accounts, which brought swift mockery from those who noticed the discrepancy:
@TeamTrump what a pile of shite. By the way, this is a shamrock ☘

@TeamTrump If you knew anything about Ireland you would have a shamrock and not clover on the cap.
