This Monday, President Trump laid down a timeline for a plan to replace Obamacare with a new healthcare law — one he doesn’t plan to reveal until after the 2020 election.
According to a series of tweets from Trump this Monday, votes on the future legislation “will be taken right after the Election when Republicans hold the Senate & win back the House.”
“It will be truly great HealthCare that will work for America,” Trump tweeted. “Also, Republicans will always support Pre-Existing Conditions. The Republican Party will be known as the Party of Great HealtCare (sic). Meantime, the USA is doing better than ever & is respected again!”
Late last month, the Department of Justice announced that it was siding with a court that found Obamacare to be unconstitutional, opening up a new front in the Trump administration’s war on the law.
Previously, the DOJ argued that Obamacare’s protections for pre-existing conditions were unconstitutional. Now, the Trump administration is arguing that the entire law should be eradicated.
Democrats aren’t happy about Trump shifting the focus back on healthcare.
“President Trump confirmed he will hold Americans hostage through the 2020 election on health care,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said at a press conference.
“They have no health care plan,” Schumer said, referring to Republicans. “It’s the same old song they’ve been singing. They’re for repeal, they have no replace.”
“Don’t let President Trump fool you,” he added. “They are not the party of health care. They are the party that wants to end health care.”
Also chiming in was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), who said that the Trump administration does “not believe in public policy that affects the good health of the American people.”
This Tuesday the House plans to vote on a resolution condemning Trump’s “legal campaign to take away Americans’ health care.”
