Early this Sunday morning, President Trump fired off a tweet claiming that Democrats’ using mail drop boxes for mail-in voting will make it possible to vote “multiple times.”
“So now the Democrats are using Mail Drop Boxes, which are a voter security disaster,” Trump wrote. “Among other things, they make it possible for a person to vote multiple times. Also, who controls them, are they placed in Republican or Democrat areas? They are not Covid sanitized. A big fraud!”
The tweet was immediately called into question by fact checkers, one of whom was the Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler.
“This is completely false,” Kessler tweeted. “You can’t vote multiple times. Each ballot is tracked and checked. Just another made-up fantasy.”
As the tweet gained traction, Twitter added a note to the tweet, which pops up whenever someone sees it in their feed.
“This Tweet violated the Twitter Rules about civic and election integrity,” the note read. “However, Twitter has determined that it may be in the public’s interest for the Tweet to remain accessible.”

According to Reuters, Democrats are promoting drop boxes as a “convenient and reliable option for voters who do not want to entrust their ballots to the U.S. Postal Service. Republican officials in other states have prevented their use.”
