As President Trump promises to devote billions of dollars to the recovery effort after Hurricane Harvey, House Republicans are gearing up to cut $1 billion from disaster relief funds in order to pay for Trump’s border wall, according to the Associated Press.
As the AP points out, the funding cut targeting the is part of a spending bill set to be debated when Congress returns from its August recess.
From the AP:
The $876 million cut, part of the 1,305-page measure’s homeland security section, pays for roughly half the cost of Trump’s down payment on a U.S.-Mexico border wall.
Since there’s only $2.3 billion left in the disaster relief accounts, GOP leader will likely move to reverse the cut, considering the political fallout that such an action would induce as the devastation from Hurricane Harvey continues to mount in Texas.
