Church bible study leader charged with sexual assault of 14-year-old girl

A bible study leader with a history of sex offenses has been charged with a string of sex crimes perpetrated against a 14-year-old girl after meeting her in a “discipleship” class at Calvary Christian Church in Oklahoma.

Donnie Ray Schultz of Del City was charged on Monday with 51 counts of sex crimes, including the possession of obscene material involving the participation of a minor.

Schultz, a self-employed handyman, befriended the girl while leading a bible class. An agent for Homeland Security reported that Schultz often picked the girl up from high school and took her to his home or to an Oklahoma Storage Unit in order to have sex with her.

According to the police, the sexual relationship was reported to have started in July 29, 2014, and continued until as recent as November 15. Del City police detective Michael Gray wrote in a report, “The victim stated that over the course of 16 months, she and the suspect have had sexual intercourse 20-30 times and had oral sex numerous times.”

NewsOK reported the church was aware that Schultz was a convicted sex offender, but was assured by his previous church that he was harmless.

“While (Schultz) led a small group Bible study on church doctrine, he was one of seven members who took turns teaching the class,” said Jason Sharp, a spokesman for the Calvary Church. “The class was for adults only, but apparently some participated in the class before they were eighteen.”

He also stated that Schultz led the discipleship class as a volunteer and that his previous church said he could be trusted.

Police believe there are more victims. Bail is set at $500,000.00.
