Man who spray painted ‘groomer’ on libraries is arrested and charged with possessing child porn

A former Maryland school librarian who was arrested on vandalism and hate crime charges last year has been hit with a new charge of possessing child pornography, WTOP News reported.

Charles Sutherland, 31, was caught on video last June spray-painting the word “groomer” on entrances to public libraries as Capital Pride Week festivities were taking place. At the time of his arrest, Sutherland was school librarian at Northview Elementary School in Bowie.

As he was being taken into custody, he consented to a search of his home and admitted that there was child porn on his computer.

From WTOP: “Police also found diapers and dolls around his apartment, including a child-sized doll in his bed. Sutherland is alleged to have told police that he had no children, and no nieces or nephews. While the computer was seized by police in June of 2022, the forensic processing of it wasn’t finished until January.”

In February, Sutherland was arrested and charged with six misdemeanor counts of possession of child pornography. He is currently being held with no bail. He’s slated to go on trial in late August on eight different charges for the vandalism and hate crime charges. His trial over the new charges will begin next month.

Since his initial arrest, he’s been on administrative leave from his job as a librarian.
