Over 470 famous American authors condemn Donald Trump in open letter to the public

As GOP nominee Donald Trump attacked his opponents over Twitter with 140 characters or less, several authors of your favorite books or series have come out and taken a stand against the real estate mogul and former reality TV star’s candidacy.

On Tuesday, “An Open Letter to the American People” was published on Literary Hub in which more than 470 authors including Stephen KingJunot Díaz, and David Eggers have joined letter authors Andrew Altschul and Mark Slouka to explain their reasoning.

In the letter, Altschul and Slouka laid out several reasons as why Trump is not the president we need right now.

“Because, as writers, we are particularly aware of the many ways that language can be abused in the name of power,” the authors wrote. “Because we believe that any democracy worthy of the name rests on pluralism, welcomes principled disagreement, and achieves consensus through reasoned debate.”

“Because the rise of a political candidate who deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society, who encourages aggression among his followers, shouts down opponents, intimidates dissenters, and denigrates women and minorities, demands, from each of us, an immediate and forceful response,” the letter continues. “For all these reasons, we, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States.”

The letter is part of wider social media campaign, identified by the hashtag #WritersAgainstTrump. Along with the letter and the backing of many notable authors, the campaign has also launched a petition in which people can also sign the letter that has garnered more than 4,000 signatures as of right now.

“For all these reasons, we, the undersigned, as a matter of conscience, oppose, unequivocally, the candidacy of Donald J. Trump for the Presidency of the United States,” read the letter.
