She voted for Trump and now her husband is getting deported

Indiana resident Roberto Beristain is scheduled to be deported despite pleas from his family and the local community.

According to a story from Indiana Public Media, Indiana resident Roberto Beristain is scheduled to be deported despite pleas from his family and the local community.

Even the mayor of a nearby city spoke up for Beristain, calling him a “model resident.”

Speaking to IPM, Beristain said he “he came to the United States from Mexico City illegally in 1998,” but “later obtained documentation to work in the country and checked in with ICE each year.” But despite a clean record and his immigration status being known to immigration authorities for over a decade, he was detained in February during one of his ICE check-ins.

But the story is also getting attention because of the interesting predicament of Beristain’s wife Helen, who voted for Donald Trump. She said that she didn’t expect Trump’s immigration policies to go after “good people” like her husband.

“[Trump] did say the good people would not be deported, the good people would be checked,” Helen said.

An uptick in ICE deportations since Trump’s inauguration has raised eyebrows across the country. One especially disturbing case is that of Sara Beltrán, who was arrested at a hospital while being treated for a brain tumor.
