Academy bans Will Smith from attending any Oscars-related event for 10 years

Over a week after actor Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock at the Oscars over a “GI Jane joke,” the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been banned from attended the Oscars or any other Academy-related event for 10 years, The Hollywood Reporter reports.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

The Academy’s 54-person board of governors held a special meeting on Friday morning to determine what action to take against Smith. Until one week ago, when Smith announced that he was resigning as a member of the organization, he was expected to face suspension or expulsion, having violated the standards of conduct that the Academy implemented after the outbreak of the #MeToo movement.

Smith approached Rock as he stood on the Oscar stage after making a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head, comparing her Demi Moore’s character in the 1997 film “GI Jane.” Smith walked right up to Rock, slapped him across the face, and proceeded to walk back to his seat. He then yelled at Rock, saying, “Keep my wife’s name out your f***ing mouth!”
