Anti-LGBTQ activist Peter LaBarbera heads the “Americans for Truth About Homosexuality,” but there wasn’t much “truth” in his words during a recent appearance on the Crosstalk program last week, where he warned that a potential Pete Buttigieg presidency would spell doom for conservative Christians.
According to LaBarbera, Buttigieg’s launch to third-place in the polls is a sign that America is “morally and spiritually” lost and is turning towards the “religious left.”
“His open homosexuality is very important because were Pete Buttigieg to rise to vice president or president, it becomes a very bad role model and lesson for America’s children,” LaBarbera said in an audio clip flagged by Right Wing Watch. “They will be indoctrinated even further into thinking that it’s acceptable, normal, and OK that instead of having a first lady or a second lady, we would have, I suppose, a first husband for a man. Imagine what we’re teaching our children. Is America that far gone.”
Buttigieg’s presence on the campaign scene takes things to a “whole new level,” LaBarbera said, adding that anyone who condemns Buttigieg’s lifestyle will be “labeled a bigot and a homophobe.”
He’s not wrong there.
“We’ll be hated,” LaBarbera warned.
“They are allowing the language to be corrupted, to apply sexual deviance to the same language as a normal marriage,” he continued. “I think if Christians speak out against that and say, ‘No,’ and they refuse to say that somebody like Pete Buttigieg is truly married before God, they will be hated.”
LaBarbera’s fears could possibly come true. According to recent polling, Buttigieg, who is also the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, surpassed Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) and former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX). Buttigieg is now in third place behind former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), with 9 percent of respondents picking him as their preferred Democratic presidential nominee, The Hill reports.
