A Republican lawmaker in Indiana is feeling the heat for making a homophobic comment about former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg in a Facebook post. After dropping out of the race, Buttigieg endorsed Joe Biden and Sen. Mike Young decided to take advantage of the situation by posting a meme and leaving a comment that suggested Buttigieg prefers being a “bottom,” LGBTQNation reports.
The meme portrays Biden standing behind the former South Bend Indiana mayor, who is standing behind a podium. Still images from Buttigieg’s endorsement speech show Biden with his hands on Buttigieg’s shoulders.
The caption implies Biden is trying to have sex with Buttigieg.
This is a familiar gambit for Republicans to tar Biden as “creepy” or “rapey” but the images usually feature Biden rubbing a woman’s shoulders or planting a kiss. So, in this case, Buttigieg, the first “out” presidential candidate is replacing a woman.
In a comment under the meme, Young wrote: “He’s used to it.”
That comment has since been removed but Indiana Talk’s Gary Snyder captured it for posterity. You can view it here.
Some Indiana LGBTQ are calling on Young and the state’s Republican Party to apologize.
It’s 2020 and the @indgop are still issuing homophobic slander against Hoosiers.
Mike Young and the @INSenateGOP should apologize for this now. pic.twitter.com/NIHEvThZQM

City Councillor Ali Brown, who’s also out, said “Hoosiers are fed up with homophobia in their state,” and noted in a tweet:
Hoosiers are fed up with homophobia in their state, especially in Marion County. What's worse, it sends a horrible message to LGBTQ youth.
This is unbecoming of a state elected office holder. The @INSenateGOP & Mike Young should apologize immediately. https://t.co/HjxNui51Ey

Young is perhaps most notable for signing a letter to the State Bureau of Motor Vehicles to request that the agency stop issuing specialty license plates that supported a local LGBTQ youth organization.
