Painters begin work on Black Lives Matter mural in front of Trump Tower in NYC

In late June, New York City officials announced that they would be painting the slogan “Black Lives Matter” on 5th Avenue, right in front of Trump Tower. Today, the city is moving ahead with that plan.

The painting of the mural began early Thursday. The project is expected to take several days.

When the project was first announced, President Trump slammed it as being a slap in the face to the city’s police force.

“NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury Avenue,” Trump wrote in a series of tweets. “This will further antagonize New York’s Finest, who LOVE New York & vividly remember the horrible BLM chant, ‘Pigs In A Blanket, Fry ‘Em Like Bacon’.”

“Maybe our GREAT Police, who have been neutralized and scorned by a mayor who hates & disrespects them, won’t let this symbol of hate be affixed to New York’s greatest street. Spend this money fighting crime instead!” Trump added.

As the New York Times has pointed out, Trump’s reference to the “Fry ‘Em Like Bacon” chant was from a 2015 protest in Minnesota.
