Seth MacFarlane: A reality TV star running against a talk show host is ‘troublingly dystopian’

Seth MacFarlane doesn’t hold back on Oprah.

Seth MacFarlane isn’t on the Oprah 2020 bandwagon. According to him, the prospect of a Winfrey-Trump campaign race would be “troublingly dystopian.”

“Oprah is beyond doubt a magnificent orator,” the Family Guy creator tweeted on Tuesday. “But the idea of a reality show star running against a talk show host is troublingly dystopian.”

“We don’t want to create a world where dedicated public service careers become undesirable and impractical in the face of raw celebrity,” he continued.

After someone challenged the sentiment, MacFarlane replied: “I don’t think anyone is questioning the breadth of her accomplishments. The observation is a more fundamental one: Will there still be room for the likes of Kamala Harris or Maggie Hassan in the political future we’re creating, or only Tom Hanks?”

It’s a powerful point. Imagine the work and accomplishment for Harris and Hassan to put themselves in a position to take the presidency, only to see those chances swept away by a billionaire celebrity.

Although there’s a swirl of excitement around a possible 2020 run in the wake of her Golden Globes speech, Oprah has said in the past that she’s not interested in running. But some inside sources (including her friend Gayle King) have said that she’s privately expressed interest.
