In a scary incident that was caught on video, a child can be seen coming across a handgun that was stashed in a couch and discharging it, ABC7 reported.
Charges were filed Tuesday against Matthew Rivas over the incident, making it the first case involving a recently-passed safe storage ordinance in Columbus City, Ohio. No one was hurt in the incident.
Columbus City Attorney Zach Klein released the home security video showing the incident, showing the child finding a loaded handgun in a couch cushion and discharging it, nearly pointing it at his face. At least one other child was in the room at the time.
Rivas pleaded guilty to two counts of negligent storage of a firearm and one count of child endangerment.
The relationship between Rivas and the child is not known.
