Owner of popular restaurant is caught on video calling Black man the N-word

The owner of a popular Massachusetts bar and restaurant is under investigation by local police after he was caught on video using the N-word towards a patron during an argument, WCVB reported.

Millyan Phillips told WCVB that he saw Trader Ed’s owner John Shea driving drunk last week and called the police, and that Shea later found out about the call and confronted him.

“He basically came up and started harassing me, saying I didn’t belong here and calling me a monkey and stuff,” Phillips said. “Like: ‘I’m going to shoot you. I’ll get you shot with a shotgun. I’ll shoot you in the back of the head.'”

In the video, Shea can be heard saying, “Do you (expletive) know who I am? Get the (expletive) out of my town. Get the (expletive) out of my town! You use my name again, you’ll end up in a grave. You use my name again, you’ll end up in a grave.”

“I just called you the N-word,” Shea later says.

When Phillips asked why he would do that, Shea replied, “Because you act like one.”

Speaking to WCVB, the Barnstable Police Department said the incident is being investigated as a hate crime.
