Tax office employee arrested for stealing money from people who thought they were paying taxes

A Georgia woman who worked at a county tax commissioner’s office has been arrested and charged for theft after she allegedly stole money from county residents who thought they were paying their taxes, Fox 5 reported.

The thefts took place over several months last year and this year at the Spalding County Tax Commissioner’s Office.

The county tax commissioner noticed irregularities and thought they may have been due to clerical errors. But after she contacted police, the missing money was tracked to employee Alteria Williams.

A local resident told the tax commissioner that he visited the office three times in May to pay taxes and was assisted by Williams each time. The resident said that Williams told him she could not give him receipts for the first two visits because the printer was broken. On the third visit, she gave him a fraudulent receipt.

When investigators took a closer look, they found a pattern of no receipts, accounts not credited, and fraudulent records claiming residents paid less than they did.

Williams, 27, has been charged with two misdemeanor counts of theft by taking and two felony counts of computer forgery.

More charges are possible.
