The single Lil Nas X promoted with his ‘Satan Shoes’ stunt debuts at No. 1

Rapper Lil Nas X has debuted his single “Montero (Call Me by Your Name)” at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, Billboard reports.

The song is his second Hot 100 No. 1, after his “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, which reigned for a record 19 weeks in 2019.

The hit comes after the rapper was the subject of controversy for his “Satan Shoes,” a collaboration with MSCHF after the release of the music video for Montero. The shoes sparked a wave of backlash from conservative and Christian figures, one of whom was evangelist Franklin Graham, who slammed the shoes as a “dangerous marketing endeavor” on his Facebook page.

“The shoes are part of promoting a new music video in which this rapper descends down a stripper pole and gives Satan a lap dance,” Graham wrote in the hugely viral post. “The morals in this country have fallen so fast, and many times the entertainment industry is leading the way.”

As of this writing, Graham’s post has been shared over 118,000 times — a feat that some say gave Nas the best marketing imaginable.
